Use in landscaping projects
Red maple is valued for year-round colour: small red flowers before the leaves, green foliage in summer and bright red autumn colour. It is used in avenues, parks, campuses, residential developments and as a specimen tree.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 15–20 m with an oval crown. In avenues it is planted 8–10 m apart. It prefers acidic to neutral, moist soils; on very calcareous soils the leaves can yellow (chlorosis). Plant in autumn or spring.
Care and maintenance
Water regularly in the first years, especially in summer. Formative pruning is done in late summer or winter, not in spring. It is very frost-hardy (to about -30°C).
