Use in landscaping projects
Photinia 'Red Robin' (Photinia × fraseri) is valued for its bright red young shoots, which appear in spring and after every trim. It is used for colourful hedges, screens, tall borders, as a solitary shrub or trained as a standard, in residential developments, at company headquarters and in commercial spaces. Combined with cherry laurel or thuja, it creates hedges with colour accents.
Planting and spacing
For hedges, 2–3 plants per linear metre are planted. It prefers sunny or partly shaded sites and well-drained soils. In regions with harsh winters, plant it in sites sheltered from cold winds.
Care and maintenance
Trimming two or three times a year stimulates new red shoots. The plant is hardy to about -15°C; in very cold winters the tips may be damaged but recover in spring. In wet summers leaf spot may appear, so well-drained soil and enough spacing for air circulation are recommended.
