Use in landscaping projects
Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides) is a classic shade tree for boulevards, street plantings, parks, school yards and squares. Its broad crown and large heart-shaped leaves give dense shade in summer, and in June–July the tree is covered with fragrant white flowers. It tolerates urban conditions well – pollution, compacted soils and heat – which is why it is common in cities.
Planting and spacing
Catalpa reaches 10–15 m in height with an equally wide crown. In avenues it is planted 8–10 m apart. It prefers sunny sites and fertile soils but adapts to most soil types. For narrow streets, globe-shaped forms are often used – ask us about availability.
Care and maintenance
After planting, trees are staked and watered regularly for the first two years. Catalpa comes into leaf late, only in May, which is normal for this species. Formative pruning is done at the end of winter, and dead branches are removed periodically.
