Use in landscaping projects
Columnar hornbeam is one of the most used trees for narrow spaces: streets, car parks, courtyards and along buildings. Planted in a row it also forms tall green screens. The leaves turn yellow in autumn and some stay dry on the branches over winter.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 10–15 m in height and 4–6 m in width at maturity. In avenues it is planted 5–8 m apart, for screens 2–3 m. It tolerates sun and partial shade and adapts to almost any soil.
Care and maintenance
It is very frost-hardy (to about -30°C), tolerates urban conditions and responds well to pruning, so it can be kept narrow. Water regularly in the first years. Prune in late summer or winter.
