Use in landscaping projects
Silver birch is valued for its white bark, decorative all year, and its airy crown that lets light through. It is used in parks, in groups of 3–5 trees, in naturalistic gardens, residential developments and recreation areas, where it creates a bright landscape.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 15–25 m with a relatively narrow crown. It looks best planted in groups, 2–4 m apart. It prefers full sun and light, well-drained soils. As its pollen is allergenic, the site near residential buildings should be chosen carefully.
Care and maintenance
It has shallow roots, so it needs regular watering and mulching in the first years and in dry summers. It does not tolerate hard pruning; light pruning is done in late summer or autumn, not spring. It is very frost-hardy.
Frequently asked questions
Why is silver birch planted in groups?
Because the white trunks and airy crowns are most decorative in groups of 3–5 trees.
When should silver birch be pruned?
Only lightly, in late summer or autumn; in spring birch bleeds a lot of sap when cut.
