Use in landscaping projects
The London plane is one of the toughest trees for cities: it tolerates pollution, compacted soils, heat and pruning, including roof-trained and pollarded forms. It is used on boulevards, squares, parks, school yards and car parks, where it gives dense shade.
Planting and spacing
A large tree reaching 25–35 m with a broad crown. In avenues it is planted 10–15 m apart; for trained (pruned) forms the spacing can be smaller. It adapts to most soils. Plant in autumn or spring and stake.
Care and maintenance
Water regularly in the first years. It responds very well to formative and maintenance pruning, done in winter. In wet springs it can lose some leaves to a fungal disease but recovers during the summer.
