Use in landscaping projects
The purple-leaf cherry plum is one of the most widely used small trees with coloured foliage. Its red-purple leaves contrast with green planting, and in March–April the tree is covered with pink flowers. It is used in narrow streets, parks, school yards, residential developments and as an informal or clipped hedge.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 5–7 m in height with a rounded crown. In avenues it is planted 5–6 m apart, and 50–70 cm apart for hedges. It adapts to most soils, including calcareous ones, and tolerates urban conditions. Leaf colour is most intense in full sun.
Care and maintenance
A robust species, frost- and drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly in the first years. Formative pruning is done after flowering; as a hedge it can be trimmed once or twice a year.
