Use in landscaping projects
The mop-head acacia is one of the most widely used trees for small urban spaces: its compact, spherical crown usually stays within 4–6 m in diameter, so it fits narrow streets, pavements, squares, car parks and building courtyards. It has a neat, geometric look and tolerates drought, heat and poor soils exceptionally well.
Planting and spacing
Plant in avenues 4–6 m apart or in regular groups. It adapts to almost any well-drained soil, including poor or sandy ones, and prefers full sun. Plant in autumn or spring with stakes.
Care and maintenance
Once established it needs very little care. The crown is thinned and shortened every few years in winter to keep its spherical shape and reduce the risk of wind breakage. Unlike the common black locust it rarely or never flowers.
Frequently asked questions
How wide does the mop-head acacia crown grow?
Usually 4–6 m in diameter, which makes it suitable for narrow streets and small spaces.
Does the mop-head acacia flower?
Very rarely; the 'Umbraculifera' form is grown for its spherical crown, not for flowers.
