Use in landscaping projects
Red oak (Quercus rubra) grows faster than most oaks and has one of the most beautiful autumn colours, in shades of bright red. It is used in large parks, wide avenues, campuses and public green spaces.
Planting and spacing
At maturity it reaches 20–25 m with a broad crown. In avenues it is planted 10–12 m apart. It prefers acidic to neutral soils; on very calcareous soils the leaves can turn yellow. Plant in autumn or spring.
Care and maintenance
In the first years water regularly and stake. Formative pruning is done in winter. It is very frost-hardy (to about -30°C) and tolerates urban conditions well.
