Use in landscaping projects
The large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos) is a classic tree for wide avenues, parks, squares and churchyards. Its broad crown gives dense summer shade, and the June flowers fill the air with fragrance and are an important nectar source for bees.
Planting and spacing
At maturity it exceeds 25 m in height, so it needs space: in avenues it is planted 8–12 m apart. It prefers fertile, deep, moist soils and tolerates calcareous soils. Plant in autumn or spring and stake.
Care and maintenance
In the first years water regularly and carry out formative pruning to raise the crown. It is very frost-hardy (to about -30°C) and long-lived. In very dry summers it may drop its leaves early.
