Use in landscaping projects
The small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) is one of the most widely used street trees in Europe. It tolerates compacted soils, pollution and urban conditions, responds well to pruning and forms a dense, regular crown. It suits avenues, parks, car parks and school yards.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 20–25 m in height. In avenues it is usually planted 8–10 m apart. It adapts to most soils, preferring fertile, moist ones. Plant in autumn or spring with staking and trunk protection.
Care and maintenance
Water regularly in the first 2–3 years. Formative pruning raises the crown for pedestrians and vehicles. It is very frost-hardy (to about -30°C). The June–July flowers are excellent for bees.
