Use in landscaping projects
Bugle (Ajuga reptans) is a low ground-cover perennial forming a dense carpet of green, bronze or purple leaves, with spikes of blue flowers in April–June. It is ideal for shaded areas under trees, path edges, gentle slopes and places where lawn does not grow well.
Planting and spacing
Plant 9–12 plants per square metre for quick coverage. It prefers partial or full shade and soils that stay slightly moist. It spreads by runners, filling the gaps between plants.
Care and maintenance
Ajuga needs very little maintenance. In dry periods it needs watering, especially in sunnier spots. After flowering, spent spikes can be cut off. If it spreads too much, runners are easily removed.
