Use in landscaping projects
Astilbe is an elegant perennial for shady, moist areas, with feathery plumes in pink, red, white and purple in summer. It is used in shady beds, on the banks of ponds and lakes, in woodland gardens and on the north side of buildings, combined with hosta and ferns.
Planting and spacing
Plant 5–7 plants per square metre in partial or full shade, in rich soils that stay moist. In strong sun and dry soil the leaf edges dry out.
Care and maintenance
Astilbe needs regular watering, especially in summer; mulching helps keep moisture in. The dry flower heads can be left over winter as they are decorative, and in spring the stems are cut to ground level. Every 3–4 years clumps can be divided.
