Use in landscaping projects
Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) forms compact, rounded tufts of fine, silvery-blue leaves that are decorative all year. It is widely used in rock gardens, modern gravel schemes, borders, green roofs and low-maintenance green spaces, where it contrasts nicely with green or burgundy foliage.
Planting and spacing
Plant 7–9 plants per square metre. It needs full sun and poor, dry, well-drained soils – in heavy, wet soils the tufts rot. The blue colour is most intense in sunny sites.
Care and maintenance
In spring, dead leaves are removed by combing the tuft by hand. Every 2–3 years, tufts that die out in the middle are divided and replanted. It needs no fertiliser and, once established, tolerates drought very well.
