Use in landscaping projects
Peony (Paeonia) is one of the most loved garden flowers, with large, fragrant blooms in late spring. It is used in beds, borders, traditional gardens and parks. It is extremely long-lived – a well-established clump can flower for decades in the same spot – and its foliage stays decorative after flowering.
Planting and spacing
The ideal planting time is autumn (September–October), but container plants can also be planted in spring. The buds at the base must not be buried deeper than 3–5 cm – planting too deep is the main reason peonies fail to flower. Leave 60–90 cm between plants.
Care and maintenance
Peony prefers sunny sites and fertile, well-drained soils. It dislikes being moved, so choose the site from the start. Stems with large flowers may need supports. In autumn, after the foliage yellows, the stems are cut back to ground level.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my peony not flowering?
The most common cause is planting too deep; the buds should be no more than 3–5 cm below soil level. Deep shade can also be a cause.
When are peonies planted?
