Use in landscaping projects
Common ivy (Hedera helix) is an evergreen climber for covering walls, fences, pergolas and posts, and also an excellent ground cover in shaded areas under trees where lawn will not grow. It is used in parks, courtyards, green walls and planters, staying green all year.
Planting and spacing
As ground cover, 4–6 plants per square metre are planted; for covering walls or fences, 2–3 plants per linear metre. It adapts to almost any soil and prefers partial or full shade.
Care and maintenance
Ivy climbs walls by itself using aerial roots. On walls with damaged render and on young trees it should be controlled by pruning so it does not harm them. It tolerates pruning at any time during the growing season. It needs regular watering in the first year, then becomes very tough.
