Use in landscaping projects
Hydrangea is one of the most spectacular flowering shrubs for gardens, building entrances, restaurant and hotel terraces, shady beds and planters. Its large round or conical flower heads in white, pink, blue or red decorate from June until autumn. It is used in groups, as a border or as a solitary shrub in the shaded parts of a scheme.
Planting and spacing
Plant 80–100 cm apart, in partly shaded sites protected from strong afternoon sun. It prefers humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. In some varieties flower colour depends on soil pH – in acidic soils the flowers can turn blue.
Care and maintenance
Hydrangea needs frequent watering, especially in summer – wilting leaves are the first sign of water shortage. Mulching helps retain moisture. Pruning depends on the variety: some flower on the previous year's wood and are only lightly trimmed, others flower on new wood and can be cut back harder in spring.
Frequently asked questions
Should hydrangea be planted in sun or shade?
It does best in partial shade, protected from strong afternoon sun, in moist, rich soil.
Why does hydrangea change its flower colour?
In some varieties the colour depends on soil acidity: in acidic soils flowers tend towards blue, in neutral or alkaline soils towards pink.
