Use in landscaping projects
Box is the traditional plant of formal gardens: path edging, parterres, low hedges and topiary (balls, cones, spirals). It stays green all year and is used at building entrances, in historic gardens, hotel courtyards and decorative pots on terraces.
Planting and spacing
For low edging plant 5–8 plants per linear metre, and 3–4 per metre for taller hedges, depending on size. It tolerates sun and shade and calcareous soils but needs good drainage.
Care and maintenance
It grows slowly and is trimmed once or twice a year, usually in early summer. Box can be attacked by the box tree moth and some fungal diseases, so plantings should be checked regularly and treated when needed. Regular watering in dry spells keeps the foliage dense.
