Use in landscaping projects
Hosta is the 'queen of shade': its large decorative leaves in green, blue, yellow or variegated shades turn shaded areas into spectacular beds. It is used under trees, on the north side of buildings, in courtyards, woodland gardens and planters, combined with astilbe, ferns and heuchera.
Planting and spacing
Depending on the size of the variety, 3–5 plants per square metre are planted. It prefers partial or full shade and rich, moist but well-drained soils.
Care and maintenance
Hosta needs regular watering in dry periods. The main pests are slugs and snails, which can hole the leaves in spring, so monitoring is recommended. In autumn the foliage dies back and the plant reshoots every spring. It is very frost-hardy, to about -30°C.
