Use in landscaping projects
Holly is valued for its glossy foliage, green all year, and its red berries, decorative in the cold season. It is used in dense, hard-to-pass hedges, shaded areas, at entrances, as a specimen or clipped into shapes. Berries appear only on female plants with a male plant nearby, and they are not edible.
Planting and spacing
For hedges plant 2–3 plants per linear metre. It tolerates sun and shade and prefers acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter it from cold, drying winter winds.
Care and maintenance
It grows slowly and is trimmed in summer. Water regularly during dry spells in the first years. It is hardy to about -20°C. Wear gloves when working with it because of the spiny leaves.
