Use in landscaping projects
Japanese blood grass brings a rare colour to planting: its upright leaves gradually turn red from spring to autumn and seem to glow when backlit. It is used in borders, mass planting, modern and Japanese gardens, pots and in combination with blue or green grasses.
Planting and spacing
It reaches 30–50 cm. Plant 7–9 plants per square metre for mass planting. It prefers sun or partial shade – the colour is more intense in sun – and moist, well-drained soils.
Care and maintenance
In late autumn or at the end of winter cut the dry leaves back close to the ground. In regions with harsh winters mulch the base. The 'Red Baron' variety spreads slowly, unlike the wild species. Hardy to about -20°C.
