Use in landscaping projects
Red hot poker (Kniphofia uvaria) is an exotic perennial with tall, torch-shaped flower spikes in orange-red to yellow in summer. It is a spectacular vertical accent in sunny beds, gravel gardens, modern schemes and Mediterranean gardens, and also attracts pollinators.
Planting and spacing
Plant 3–5 plants per square metre in full sun and well-drained soil. Drainage is essential especially in winter, when excess moisture can kill the plant.
Care and maintenance
It tolerates drought once established. Spent flower stems are cut after flowering. In regions with cold winters, the leaves can be tied together over the crown in autumn to protect it from wet, and the base mulched. Old leaves are cleaned up in spring.
