Use in landscaping projects
Crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is an exotic shrub with crinkled flowers in pink, red, purple or white from July to September, when few shrubs are still in flower. In autumn the leaves turn orange and red, and its decorative bark peels. It is used as a solitary shrub, trained as a standard, in urban plantings, on terraces and in Mediterranean gardens.
Planting and spacing
Hardy to about -15°C, crape myrtle does best in regions with mild winters, in sunny, warm sites sheltered from cold winds. It prefers well-drained soils. Planting is done in spring.
Care and maintenance
It comes into leaf late, only at the end of spring. Flowers appear on new wood, so pruning is done at the end of winter. Young plants are protected in their first winters by mulching the base.
