Use in landscaping projects
The windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is one of the few frost-hardy palms, suitable for outdoor planting in many regions. Its large fan-shaped leaves and fibre-covered trunk bring an exotic touch to hotel and restaurant terraces, pools, courtyards and Mediterranean gardens.
Planting and spacing
It is hardy to about -12°C, and well-established mature specimens can tolerate short, harder frosts. Plant in sunny or partly shaded sites sheltered from cold winds, in well-drained soil. It is also suitable for large containers.
Care and maintenance
In summer it needs moderate watering. In severe winters, young specimens are protected: the leaves are tied upwards and the trunk and crown are wrapped in fleece. Old, dry leaves are cut off at the base.
