Use in landscaping projects
Firethorn 'Red Column' forms dense, thorny hedges that are hard to get through, so it is used to mark property boundaries, technical areas and car parks. It can also be trained against walls or fences. The white May–June flowers attract bees, and the red berries stay decorative into winter and feed birds.
Planting and spacing
For hedges plant 2–3 plants per linear metre. It prefers sun or partial shade and well-drained soils. It reaches 2–3 m if left untrimmed.
Care and maintenance
Trim after flowering and lightly at the end of summer, leaving enough fruiting shoots. It is hardy to about -20°C. Because of the thorns, wear protective gloves when working with it.
