Use in landscaping projects
Hylotelephium spectabile (formerly Sedum spectabile) is a robust perennial with fleshy leaves and flat pink flower heads from late summer to autumn. It is an excellent nectar plant, attracting bees and butterflies, and is used in sunny beds, borders, naturalistic gardens and low-maintenance public spaces.
Planting and spacing
Plant 5–7 plants per square metre in full sun and well-drained soil. It does not need rich soil – in overly fertile soils the stems flop.
Care and maintenance
It is very drought tolerant. Dry flower heads can be left over winter as they are decorative, and in spring the stems are cut to ground level. It needs no fertiliser.
Frequently asked questions
When does Sedum spectabile flower?
From late summer to autumn, usually August–October.
Why do Sedum spectabile stems flop?
Most often because the soil is too rich or the site too shady; the plant prefers poor soils and full sun.
