Use in landscaping projects
Bearded iris (Iris germanica) is a classic, drought-tolerant perennial with large, elegant flowers in late spring in purple, blue, white, yellow and bicolours. It is used in sunny beds, borders, traditional gardens, slopes and public green spaces. Its sword-shaped leaves stay decorative after flowering.
Planting and spacing
Plant 6–9 plants per square metre. The rhizomes are planted at the surface, half exposed – planting too deep leads to rot and no flowers. It needs full sun and well-drained soil.
Care and maintenance
Once established, iris tolerates drought very well and should not be overwatered. Every 3–4 years, after flowering (July–August), dense clumps are divided and replanted. Dead leaves are removed in autumn.
Frequently asked questions
