When to plant thuja and conifers? A planting calendar

Planting time directly affects how well plants establish and how quickly they develop. The general rule is simple: plant when the soil is not frozen and there are no extreme temperatures. The important differences are between root-balled plants and container-grown plants.
Indicative planting calendar
| Plant type | Best period | Notes |
|---|
| Balled conifers (thuja, pine, spruce) | March–April and September–November | Autumn is ideal: the soil is warm and the rain helps rooting. |
| Container conifers | March–November | Can also be planted in summer, with plenty of water and avoiding heatwaves. |
| Balled deciduous trees | October–November and March–April | While dormant, without leaves. |
| Container shrubs and hedges | March–November | Avoid heatwaves and frozen soil. |
| Perennials | March–May and September–October | Spring for frost-sensitive species. |
| Frost-sensitive species (olive, Magnolia grandiflora, Lagerstroemia) | April–May | So they have time to root before winter. |
Why autumn is the best time for conifers
In autumn the soil is still warm from summer while air temperatures drop. Roots keep growing while the top of the plant uses little water. Autumn rain reduces the need for watering, and the following spring the plant starts off already rooted. That is why autumn (September–November) is the preferred time for balled conifers such as Thuja Smaragd, blue spruce or black pine.
Spring planting
Spring (March–April) is the second very good period, especially for more frost-sensitive species, which need a full season to root before their first winter. The drawback is that summer follows quickly, so watering must start immediately and be kept up regularly.
Can you plant in summer?
Container plants can also be planted in summer, because their roots are not disturbed at planting. The condition is generous watering – daily in the first weeks during heatwaves – and planting in the morning or evening. Balled plants are not recommended in summer.
When not to plant
- On frozen or snow-covered soil.
- During heatwaves above 30°C without the possibility of watering.
- In waterlogged soil after heavy rain – wait a few days.
Planning large projects
For landscaping projects with large volumes, order early: the most sought-after species and sizes are reserved early for the spring and autumn planting seasons.
