Use in landscaping projects
Thuja 'Smaragd' is the landscapers' first choice for elegant hedges in residential developments, private gardens, commercial sites and company headquarters. Its narrow columnar shape takes up little space – ideal for small plots and along fences – and its emerald-green colour lasts through winter without turning bronze like other thuja varieties. It is also used in double rows for privacy screens, as a vertical accent at entrances or in large containers on terraces.
Planting and spacing
For a dense hedge, 2–3 plants per linear metre are usually planted (35–50 cm apart), depending on the height of the plants delivered. The planting hole should be twice as wide as the root ball; after planting, water thoroughly and mulch with bark. Container plants can be planted from spring to autumn, avoiding frost and heatwaves.
Care and maintenance
Thuja 'Smaragd' grows moderately (about 20–30 cm per year) and does not need frequent trimming – one light correction a year is enough. In the first two years after planting it needs regular watering, especially in summer; prolonged drought is the main cause of browning. A spring feed with conifer fertiliser keeps the colour intense.
