Use in landscaping projects
Black pine (Pinus nigra) is a robust tree for parks, shelterbelts, roadside plantings, slopes and low-maintenance green spaces. It tolerates drought, wind, calcareous soils and urban pollution better than most conifers, which is why it is widely used in public projects and in regions with a harsh continental climate. As a solitary specimen it has an imposing silhouette with a dense, dark-green crown.
Planting and spacing
As a solitary tree it needs space – at maturity it exceeds 15–20 m. For shelterbelts it is planted in rows, 3–4 m apart. It prefers sunny sites and adapts to soils from sandy to clay, as long as they are not permanently waterlogged.
Care and maintenance
Once established, black pine needs very little care: watering only in the first years and during very dry periods after planting. It requires no pruning apart from removing dead branches or those obstructing paths and roads.
