Use in landscaping projects
Japanese cherry (Prunus serrulata) is one of the most spectacular flowering ornamental trees: in April the crown is covered with pink or white, often double flowers. It is an attraction in parks, street plantings, squares, school yards and residential developments, and in autumn its leaves turn orange and red.
Planting and spacing
At maturity it reaches 6–8 m in height with a broad crown. In avenues it is planted 6–8 m apart. It prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soils without standing water.
Care and maintenance
After planting, trees are staked and watered regularly for the first two years. Pruning is limited to removing dead or crossing branches and is done after flowering or in summer to reduce the risk of disease.
