Use in landscaping projects
Creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis) is one of the best solutions for covering large areas with minimal maintenance: slopes, roundabouts, public squares, car parks, rock gardens and path edges. It forms a dense carpet 15–30 cm high that stabilises soil on slopes, prevents erosion and suppresses weeds. It is widely used in public green-space projects precisely because of its low maintenance costs.
Planting and spacing
Each plant eventually spreads 1.5–2.5 m. Depending on plant size and how quickly you want coverage, 1–3 plants per square metre are usually planted. Until the carpet closes, mulch the area with bark or use weed-control fabric.
Care and maintenance
Once established it tolerates drought, heat and poor soils very well. It needs no pruning apart from shoots growing over kerbs or paths. Wet soils where water stagnates should be avoided, as the roots can rot there.
Frequently asked questions
How many creeping juniper plants are needed per square metre?
Usually 1–3 plants per m², depending on the size of the plants and how quickly you want full coverage.
Is creeping juniper suitable for slopes?
Yes, its roots and dense carpet hold the soil on slopes and reduce erosion, which is why it is widely used on slopes and roundabouts.
