Use in landscaping projects
Oriental thuja (Platycladus orientalis) is an excellent alternative to common thuja in hot, dry regions and very sunny urban spaces. Its vertical, fan-shaped branches give it a distinctive decorative texture. It is used for hedges, screens, rows along paths and in cemeteries, where it is valued for its neat appearance all year round.
Planting and spacing
For hedges, 2–3 plants per linear metre are planted. It prefers sunny sites and well-drained soils, including calcareous ones. Water well after planting and repeat during dry spells in the first year.
Care and maintenance
It tolerates drought better than Thuja occidentalis, but needs regular watering in the first years for good rooting. It can be lightly trimmed in spring or summer to keep its shape; hard cuts into old wood should be avoided.
