Use in landscaping projects
Norway spruce is the classic conifer of hilly and mountain areas. In landscaping it is used in parks, shelterbelts against wind and snow, conifer groups and as a living Christmas tree in squares and courtyards. Its dense conical crown stays green all year.
Planting and spacing
It exceeds 25–30 m, so it needs space: as a specimen at least 5–6 m from buildings, in shelterbelts 2.5–4 m apart. It prefers a cool climate and acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils.
Care and maintenance
In lowland areas with hot, dry summers it needs regular watering and mulching, especially in the first years. No pruning is needed. It is very frost-hardy.
