Use in landscaping projects
Mountain pine grows naturally in the alpine zone and is one of the toughest conifers for landscaping. It is used in rock gardens, on slopes, roundabouts, intensive green roofs, planters and roadsides, where it tolerates wind and even salt.
Planting and spacing
Depending on variety it reaches 1–3 m in height and width. Plant 1–1.5 m apart for compact groups. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils, including poor or calcareous ones.
Care and maintenance
In spring the new shoots ('candles') can be shortened by a third to a half for a more compact shape. Once established it tolerates drought and frost very well. No other care is needed.
